Good Reads For The Week: 29/01/2012

Another week is over, January is almost done and I have another link dump filled with some of the things I’ve been reading over the past seven days.

Web Development

• Get involved in Open Source today
  Scott Hanselman is one of the most well-known contributors to ideas surrounding ASP.NET, Microsoft and development in general. Here he outlines how to get involved with Github hosted open source projects.
• Skip Intro – CSS3 is the new Flash
  Scott wrote some great posts this week. This one relates CSS3 to Flash, something to bear in mind, especially when you see things like the next link!
• Command & Conquer recreated using HTML5
  I loved C&C back in the day and this is an impressive port to modern day web development. The source is on Github too.
• The State of HTML5 Video
  HTML5 video is here to stay.
• HTML5 Please
  HTML5 Please is available, allowing you to see what is available and where.
• Building ASP.NET MVC Forms with Razor (ASP.NET MVC Foundations Series)
  I think the ASP.NET MVC framework is incredibly underrated outside of the .NET community. This is a useful introduction from Michael C. Kennedy.
• The currency in the developer community is enthusiasm.
  I found this note pretty inspiring to be honest, if a little long. We’re fortunate to work in an exciting industry at an exciting time.
• The Startup Skill Set
  I found this an interesting post from Daniel Tenner discussing the skills needed to succeed in a start up.

Other Stuff

• Joseph Lightfoot’s 2012 Reading List
  Joseph Lightfoot is a smart guy who writes some interesting things and best of all he does it from the greatest city on earth, Manchester. This is his list of things he’ll be reading in 2012 but check out the rest of his writing too.
• Pydanny’s tips for speaking
  A useful post if you’ll be giving a presentation any time soon.
• An Introvert’s Guide to Networking
  I don’t really like the word ‘networking’ but I love the idea of meeting like-minded folk and bouncing ideas and inspiration off each other.
• What is 3D printing?
  3D printing got a lot of coverage this week and it’s no wonder because the entire concept is mind-blowing. This is a great introduction to it.
